J.K. Rowling has written a four-part piece called History of Magic in North America which is posted on the Pottemore Website. This is apparently meant to generate interest in advance of an upcoming Harry Potter spin-off film called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Besides this, the work has generated a fuss about cultural appropriation.

Rowling has commented on Native American “witches” and “magic,” apparently giving this a place in her Harry Potter universe. Rather than casual, everyday magic, Native Americans have always considered their ways as sacred practices. So, does Rowling have a right as an author to feature these practices in her Harry Potter universe? Or should she have had more respect and left them alone?
